Where the hell I have been, and other news!

So I haven't posted in a good while.  I have made a little bit of progress on multiple projects, but my biggest project has been a big.  I got hired by my FLGS to open up their second location.  With only slightly less than a month to do it.  And with no real distributors lined up.  It's been rough.  It has also been unbelievably rewarding.  I've been doing so much work that my insomnia hasn't been an issue in like two weeks now, and I'm making very good money from the LLC that owns it.

The new store is called Mandatory Fun.  For any of you military folk out there, that phrase has a very special meaning, haha.  For those of you without exposure to the suck that is mandatory fun, it's a term used to describe a horribly planned unit event, that is supposedly fun but never is, and you better go or else you're screwed.  If you're asking yourself, "Why would they name a store after that?", it's because it's a military themed store.  It's not even a true game store.  We carry military themed apparel, books, hold workshops for Veterans who want to learn how to write, get published, etc, and while we do carry board games, card games, and tabletop minis, they are all military based games.

While this is fairly far away from my big focus on 40k at the moment, it allows me to paint my own Dust stuff, create a league, and get paid in the process.  It works out rather nicely in fact.  As a Veteran myself, I also really do get pleasure out of working with soldiers and Veterans as well.

Anyways, the store opens tomorrow, so once it gets a regular battle rhythm going, I'll be painting and posting more.  Until then though, have a wonderful new year, and may the dice gods be ever in your favor!

Update time!!!

So yes, I am finally adding more pictures.  However, these were taken with my iPhone, so they aren't necessarily the best quality.  They will certainly do for the time being, however.  So this is the knee pad of the Chaos Reaver Titan I am working on.  For more pictures, check below!!!

New pictures coming soon!

So yes, I haven't posted in a while.  Nothing really new there.  However, if you have kept up with what I have posted, you'll remember that my son lost my CF Card for my camera.  And at 30 some odd dollars a pop, I haven't had too much money to buy a new one.  I got on finally though this paycheck, so once it comes in I'll post pictures up of what I have been working on.

The Reaver Titan is coming along, and I am done with the guns and almost done with the legs now.  I was having trouble settling on which copper color to buy from what brand, and after testing out a plethora of them, I finally settled on GW's.  I'm not as fan of GW's paints normally, but their copper goes on very smooth and coats very nicely with only 1 or 2 coats needed for the base color.

I also am almost finished with 2 Nurgle Blight Drones I am painting on commission.  I'll have pictures of them side by side as well on here when I get the card.

Finally, I'll have pictures of my finished Nurgle Warpsmith I converted up.  The thing came out nicely in my opinion.  I love the final look.  The Scythe and Forge World parts really pull it all together nicely.

Anyways, there is my small post.  Enjoy if you will, and hopefully I'll have a real post filled with all sorts of goodies later in the week.

A Titan and a Hell Chicken

So yes, I have taken on another very large commission piece!  This time I have the pleasure of painting a Chaos Reaver Titan!  First off, this model is MUCH larger than I thought it would be, and it is a heavy piece of resin, haha.  I dread what Forge World will put out if they actually follow through on the Warlord Titan...  Anyways, check below for more info on how this model will play out as I paint, and also for my thoughts on the new Chaos Hell Drake.

Greater Brass Scorpion done!!!

So yes, as this title states, this thing is FINALLY done!  It took me WAY too long to complete, but I'm sure my friend is going to go banana sandwich when he sees it tomorrow.  I have to apologize for the really crappy pictures here.  I wanted to take great ones since it was finally done, but it seems my 2 year old thought otherwise when he took my memory card for my nice camera off my desk and hid it God knows where...  But anyways, check below for more!

Getting my Chaos on!

So with the release of Chaos over the weekend, I have been a busy man!  In all honesty, I have been mildly busy with Chaos anyways, but this has been the motivation I needed to get me back on the right track.  I haven't posted in a while due to general laziness, followed by finals, followed then by Guild Wars 2, Borderlands 2, and the new WoW xpac (don't judge me...).  I am, however, back at it!  This post will hopefully show all of you what I have been up to, and what the future holds for me.

An update!

So I haven't posted in  a while, but I just had midterms so I was fairly busy with that.  However, I haven't completely stopped painting.  I have been doing a Forge World Greater Brass Scorpion as a commission piece, and matching it to the paint job off of the Forge World site, and it is coming along great!  I have finished the armor plates, which were airbrushed, as well as the cables, which I built up from black to a very dark grey so that you can actually make them out.  Once it is done, I will make sure to put up pictures.  I am also working on 40 Plague Bearers and a Soul Grinder for my Death Guard army.  The airbrushing, washing, and dry brushing is done, and all I have left on them is the detail work and to rust the metal parts.

On to more important news, I actually won my local painting competition.  I got a Vallejo Game Color paint set with 72 paints, 3 brushes, and a carrying case for it all.  I was very pleased about that!

My final bit of news is that I plan on starting some commission work on models.  I have to knock out some more models that I am currently working on, and I have to set up my blog to reflect it, but I should be ready to go in a month or so.  I will only be doing single modes, single squads, or large vehicles/monstrous creatures.  I used to do large scale commission painting in the past, but I cannot do anything more than a few models or else I start to resent it.  I will be painting to only one degree, which will be a high-table top level, and the pricing will be on a case by case basis.  Stay tuned for more info on that.

Anyways, sorry for the lack of content on here, but the stuff I post in the next week or two should be amazing and make up for it.  Everyone have a great and safe Labor Day weekend!

Stupid models....

This model.  It makes me angry while I put it together.  I keep gluing the blades on wrong like an idiot...fml

Update!!!!

So I am now finished moving out of my old house, and now begins the process of unpacking everything and going through all of the "fun" associated with that business.  Anyways, I thought I would fill everyone in on what I am working on during my 5 minutes of free time a day, and what my future plans are:

  • Daemons!  I got a large amount of them to compliment all of my Chaos stuff.  I bought a bunch of the new Nurgle toys to go with my Death Guard, and a bunch of just about everything else to go with the Word Bearers I will be working on.  I have a Battle Box and a few other kits already for waiting to be built once the new codex drops, and I will be absolutely buying a large amount of the new stuff once it comes out as well.  I plan to buy about 3 of the starter boxes, which leads me on to my next project...

  • Fallen Angels.  I plan to build me a Fallen Angels army, which will be built using the new Dark Angels codex whenever that comes out.  I plan to use a lot of the actual Dark Angels kits, but also some Chaos stuff as well.  I'll have some squads who truly fell to Chaos, as well as some who rebelled during the Heresy because they thought Lion El'Johnson fell.  If you think that it's wrong, read more into the Dark Angels.  There are several different things that have been mentioned in different books, short stories, etc, that sheds some very interesting insight into their true history.

  • The table!  Now that I am moved in and in a more static set up, I plan to actually finish the table.  I have a friend who is going to help me get it all painted and mounted, so it shouldn't be too bad once I actually put forth the effort, haha.

Anyways, I now have unavoidable wife aggro, so I must complete more things on the Honey-do list that is 5 miles long...

So I need a favor

So this painting comp at my FLGS has started!!!  The prize is one of the giant Vallejo paint sets, with the carrying case and brushes and what not.  If everyone could help me win by voting for my Blight Drone, I would be GREATLY appreciative!  The competition is meh, but a couple of the models are good.  The photos are shady, so the picture above is what I submitted!  Anyways, go to the following Facebook page and vote for my Blight Drone:

Cypher, rushed but painted

So for my local Black Crusade campaign, I made a Fallen Angel.  We use models to represent stuff in our group, so I decided to dust off the old Cypher model that I had laying around and actually paint him.  This was done fairly rushed, in about 5 hours total (which includes dry times) because I had a game to play with it this afternoon, but I am still pretty happy about how it came out.  Check out below for more info and pictures.

Fantasy Flight Games

So I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I got into Black Crusade at my FLGS.  An issue we have come across lately is that every Black Crusade Core Book that somebody buys starts falling apart within 2-3 days of them buying it.  This is a picture taken on day 2...  I have a lot of experience with their products, and no other time have I had this happen to them, and the other books that we got in the same shipment are perfectly fine.  So I e-mailed them, and the told me to fill out a part replacement form for the whole book and to include pictures, and they would replace the whole thing!  It's game companies like that which I really enjoying giving my business to.  They could have told me to get lost, or to glue it, or whatever, but they instead where VERY easy and pleasant to deal with, which is a huge relief.  Anyways, here are some more pictures below of what it looks like.

Sunday, July 22, 2012

Well, it's the weekend.

First off, here are some pictures from the Beerhammer 40k game at my house a couple of weeks back.  I have been forgetting to post them, so sorry about that.  These were taken as we were cleaning up, so there aren't many models on the table.  All of the containers from the drinking are still there though, giving you a rough idea of how we used them as terrain to block vehicles and shooting.  What we should have done though is taken a count of all of the shots we took to reroll, haha.  That's what ended my sobriety.  You could take a shot of anything to reroll something, and on average there was about 3 shots taken per team, per player turn.  We literally finished off a bottle of vodka, and a little absinthe as well.  Rough night.  Anyways, here are some other angles of the battle.  The board isn't finished, but since I am moving across town next months, I haven't felt like working on it just for it to get messed up in the move.  I'll do more once I'm all settled in.

On to other news, I have been painting as much as I can lately, so I should have some nice pictures of all of that to put up shortly.  I have been focusing purely on my Dust stuff, since I am waiting for the new Chaos Codex to drop before I put any more Chaos models together.  Don't want to build them all with weapon A when weapon B becomes AMAZING!  I hate painting flesh, but it has been a good exercise for me in it, since I generally try to avoid it at all possible times.

On a more somber note, however, today marks the 5 year anniversary of the death of a great friend.  His name was Juan Restrepo, and we served together in Battle Company, 2/503rd (ABN), 173rd ABCT while in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan.  He was a great friend, an amazing battle brother, and the best damn medic I ever worked with.  There isn't a day that goes by where I don't think of him, and no matter what happens, I'll never forget him either.  No matter what you think of the wars, or of soldiers, please just respect the sacrifices some people have made.  DTV brother, I'll see you again one day.

This is a picture of us in Afghanistan, a few weeks before he was killed.

Anyways, I'm fairly drunk, so take care and stay tuned for less depressing stuff, and more models!

An update for you all!

This picture sums up my feelings...I WANTS MAH CHAOS MAHRINEZ!!!!!!  But all bad spelling aside, I realllllllly do.  Until then I guess I just have to finish some Dust models and weather them using my new AK Interactives stuff.

Random news and a Beerhammer update!

So to start with the news, I am as giddy as a little school girl over the fact that the new Chaos Codex is looming right around the corner.  I have a cool $1k put aside to apease the Gods when that one drops.  But what to do with the other chugnk of money I recently aquired?  Well, I WAS going to buy a Reaver Titan, but a good friend talked me out of it.  Instead, I bought a BUNCH of other random goodies.  More info below, as well as Beerhammer 40k Version 1.1!!!!!

Beerhammer 40k, Version 1.0

So I have finally sat down and hashed out the rules for this.  I have played it in the past, and I know there is another blogger who wrote something similar, but I can't remember who.  I used some inspiration from a Dakka Dakka post that google found, but here is what I came up with.  Feel free to use these, and add any suggestions in the comments section.  As my friends and I play more, I will actually be updating these every once and a while to stay current, fun, and mildly dangerous.

News from me, and something I MUST buy!

So the fires here in Colorado Springs have kept me occupied for the last week, as a very good friend of mine was forced to evacuate his home so I put him up in mine.  I was busy playing the role of a good host, so I had literally no time to work on any of my models.  I was wayyyyyyy to busy keeping my house clean and drinking on the porch all week.  Anyways, his house is fine, and he is no longer in the mandatory evacuation area, so I have my house to myself again!  As for the mention of what I must buy, I came across an AWESOME invention by a painter who goes by the interwebs name of Rathcore.  He is an amazing painter and sculptor, and he came up with a tool that lets you hold a project steady with out getting your dirty mugs all over it.  Check out below for more info.

Drinking and painting equals...

Stripping models!  So yeah, priming and painting drunk may not be the best idea.  My proof is my Cygnar army.  I have about 30 some odd models that I am in the process of stripping and washing off.  Tons of fun.  When drunk, I screwed up in way too many ways:

-Used WAY too much primer on the models
-Primed in my garage while it was raining, so the humidity made everything fuzzy
-then sponged on rust colors, and went straight to sponging on liquid latex, without varnishing first.  This meant that the latex REALLY got a firm hold in between all the ridges of the models that the fuzziness created
-Next morning while hung over, I convinced myself I could fix it.  How?  By putting MORE paint on the models.  4 layers to be exact.  And wash.

So after wasting a few hours and a bunch of paint, I had to go out and buy Purple Power to fix it all.  Most of the models are stripped to the metal, which is nice, but I still have a few left and then I get to start all over.  Yay me.  So, lesson learned.  Maybe.  And by maybe, I mean probably not.

Cygnar Stormwall is done!

So yes, I bought one of these last weekend, and I have been slaving away at it.  I absolutely loveeeeeee the model, and I wasted no time painting it up in my Swamp theme that I am doing all of my Cygnar in.  Anyways, more pictures and words below!

What, I still have a blog? Oh, yeah....

So to get the obvious out of the way, I haven't posted in over a month.  Lots of things have been going on.  Diablo 3 came out, and my damn near 250 hours of time played between my 3 60's shows that I no longer have a life...  Also, I have been trying to close on a house, and that should finally be finished next Friday.  That means a bigger man cave, and the chance to paint my walls however I want (wife approving, of course).  I also have been frustrated with GW over their recent price changes AGAIN, but the Internet is filled with enough vitriol over that, so I won't bore you with my feelings.  On a bigger note though, I have dove head first into Warmachine and Hordes.  More info on all of this though below!

Secret Weapon bases are in!!!!

So yes, my bases arrived yesterday afternoon, and as soon as the kid went to bed last night and I had free time, I stayed up until 3am working on getting my Cygnar models based.  I have to say, these bases are easily the best I have ever worked with.  The raised edges add a whole new level of detail, and the water effect is amazing on bases.  Anyways, here are the pictures of how these came out.  I'll put out a post on how I did all of this once the rest of my models arrive in the mail next week or so.

Quick Death Guard Update

I'm sick so this will be quick, but here is where these guys stand.  I'm considering calling this enough, so take these as finished.  I did the bases yesterday, and they came out fairly well.  Anyways, here is the rest.

So the picture is fairly shitty, but you get the idea.  Anyways, when I'm feeling better I'll take better pics and put them up.  Anyways, thanks for looking everyone!

Finally, an actual update!

Okay, so it has been a while since I have put anything up here other than links to my eBay sales and excuses, so he we go!  Right now I am finished painting my Cygnar stuff that I have, I am nearing completion on a squad and a dread for my Death Guard, I have managed to almost base coat my Pleasuredemon, and I got a new paint rack!  Check below for more info.

So the Necrons didn't sell...

So as the title says, they didn't sell.  I had them listed for well below retail, so I am a little annoyed.  Anyhow, if anyone wants these, I'm willing to haggle on the price.  Shoot me an e-mail at damnthevalley@gmail.com.  If anyone at a FLGS wants them, I am also willing to take store credit.  Here is the list:

Necrons for sale!

Like I said in my last post, I need to sell my Necrons.  So they are now up with a starting bid of $750, which is only 62% of the actual retail cost, and a buy it now of $1000, which is stil $200 less than retail!!!!  Pass the word on to anyone you know who is looking for some Necrons for cheap, some of which are even pretty to look at, haha.

Here is the auction!

Update!

So I have no pictures for this week.  I don't know where the battery charger for my camera is...yeah, one of those weeks.  Here is a VERY quick update on what is going down in my laboratory!!!!

-  Working more on the Pleasuredemon.  Skin done, horns/hooves done, wings colored, shaded, need final highlights, and I started base coating the leather but got bored.

-  Necrons:  selling them.  I know, they are looking pretty good in my opinion, but I don't play them and they are a drain on time for the armies I do want to play: my Chaos and my Thousand Sons.

-  Chaos:  Working on picking out the details for on the Plaguemarines and the Dread, but most of my efforts here are in the demon.

-  Thousand Sons:  building up the motivation to paint them.  Mostly I am trying to finish the stuff that I already have on my desk to make space, but rest assured, these will get worked on.

-  Table:  I have brought the buildings that need painting inside and I am starting to prime them with a nice dark brown primer I bought.  This will be used to undercoat for the rust effect I used on my Death Guard and Warmachine models.

-  Warmachine:  I am almost done with the models, just need to airbrush the sword on one model and then do a final bit of rusting pigments before they get their third and final matte varnish.  Once I have more money, I will be getting them bases from the genius known simply as Mr. Justin over at Secret Weapon Miniatures.

So that about sums it up.  I'll try to get pictures up once I get the battery located, but until then, just picture amazing things.  Until next time...

Something demonic this way comes...

So I had some store credit at my FLGS, and I noticed that this model had been sitting on the shelf for some time.  Now, I'm very excited about Chaos Legions, so I figured that a model like this would help me get back in the mood to paint.  If you haven't seen this model before, this is the Pleasuredemon from Ultraforge Models.  I figured this would be a great counts-as Slaanesh Greater Demon, if I ever decide to go that route, so I figured I might as well pick it up.  Anyways, check below for more info on it, as well as a couple more pictures.

Excuses and a sale!

So, for those of you wondering where I have been, I recently just got finished with an accelerated 5 week quarter in college that was a LOT more work than I thought it would be.  While I came out victorious somehow, I have not managed to get anything done hobby wise.  I have a two week break starting this weekend, followed by a normal school schedule this coming quarter, so I am hoping to work on the table again as well as all of my other projects.

However, I am trying to clear out my giant collection of models I don't use, so the first to hit ebay is my Chaos Warhound Titan and weapons.  If you haven't seen it, there are quite a few pictures of it on my Chaos Gallery.  It was a labor of love, but it takes up a considerable amount of space and nobody locally wants to play Apoc, so it's value is decreasing in my eyes.  I have started the bidding at $500, which is $60 less than retail, so when you take into account that it is fully painted with magnetized weapons, it's quite the deal.  Anyways, I have to finish a last minute essay that is due tomorrow morning, so I am off, but be on the look out over the next week or two for new work from me.  Cheers!

Necron Tomb Stalker WIP

So I finally got this thing built.  I have been extremely busy with school, so I managed to get it done over three days, which isn't too bad in my opinion.  It is a large amount of parts, most of which are poseable beyond belief, and getting every single leg (which is at least two parts per) in place was some what of a nightmare.  However, now that it is done, I appreciate the option to do that.  I built this guy crawling over a dragon skull, and the model for the skull actually allows me to hook the legs into certain cracks and whatnot, so he is actually hanging almost sideways on parts of it.  The model isn't even glued on at the moment, it just rests there.  Anyways, a couple more pictures below, and some more info on what else I have been up to.

Some WIP's!!!

So I haven't posted in a good while now, but I have been very busy since I just started school up again, and I am taking accelerated 5 week courses instead of traditional semesters since my GI Bill only covers 36 months of school, regardless how much I finish.  5 week courses means that I do as much homework in one week as most people do in 3-4 weeks.  Not fun.  However, I have managed to get some stuff done for the hobby!  The picture above is the base I made for my Necron Tomb Stalker that I have yet to even clean...but at least the base is assembled!  It's made using two different Secret Weapon Miniatures products, their Dragon Skull and a 95mm x 120mm oval base from their Desert Mesa line of bases.  As I have said before, I absolutely LOVE the products Mr. Justin puts out.  High quality and cheap prices are always a winner in my opinion.  Anyways, I am all over the place with my WIP's at the moment, so check out below!

A how to! Destroyers done quickly.

So today I was bored and I decided to finally do a How To on how I paint my Necrons.  I made some last minute changes to my 500 point list, so I needed 2 Destroyers painted in a hurry, and I had 3 built already, so the last guy got lucky and I painted him anyways.  Check below for the multitude of pictures I took during the process!

First Ghost Ark complete-ish...

So with exception to the prow, which I somehow didn't even notice till I was editing the photos, this model is done!  It took a little longer than I would have liked, mostly due to me breaking a nozzle for my airbrush, rushing it in for extra money, and then losing the new nozzle down the drain later that night while cleaning, but oh well.  Also, this has to have been my least favorite model to put together.  Satan designed this model.  It looks great, but damn is it a pain.  Even the driver is in like 300 pieces...his hips are separate from his legs and torso...  Anyways, check below for more pictures (YAY!).

Deathmarks!?!?!?!?

So after screwing around with these guys for the last week, and not wanting to paint due to the fact that I have been sick and in bed most of the time, these guys are finally done.  I wanted to go with a more subdued color to them, since I have a hard time putting bright colors to anything along the lines of a sniper (damn you military training).  I like the black base, not just because it will stand out from my army and provide a nice contrast, but also because it really makes glow effects off the lights and what not pop out more.  I tried doing a hard highlight with a dark red along the black, but I don't have any brushes that have their tip anymore, so it didn't come out pretty, haha.  I did order a whole new set of brushes though, which was long over due, so that might force me to go back and highlight everything.  Anyways, check below for more pictures as usual.

Necron army so far...

So, here is what I have painted so far.  It totals up to 15 Immortals with Tesla's, 5 Lychguards with Hyperphase Swords and Dispersion fields, a Overlord with Staff of Light and Res Orb, and a Command Barge with Tesla as well.  Once I get my 5 Deathmarks put together, I will have my 500 point list for the league painted up, which will allow me some free time to paint other things.  Check below for a closer picture of the lord...

Fancy Necron shields!!!!!

So I decided that I needed some Lychguards to paint.  The shields just called out to me to play with.  So, after several hours of putting on masking tape, airbrushing, taking off masking tape, and repeating too many times, this is how they came out.  I am happy.  A kind of happy that could only be equalled by a leaked PDF of 6th edition magically appearing on the Internet.  Oh, what's that you say?  One did appear?  YAY MAGIC! (though not the card game....grrrrr, magic the gathering)  Anyways, check below for more pictures of individual dudesmen!

First squad done (I think...)

So here is the first squad of Immortals.  In fact, I was thinking this morning that this is actually the first whole squad I have painted in a VERY long time.  I usually paint up my big models and special characters, and then look at my squads and get frustrated just thinking about all the repetition that will be involved.  Not this time though!

So yeah, I am actually enjoying painting these Necrons, so I have been thinking about playing Necrons in my escalation league that starts in 3 weeks.  It hasn't started yet so switching armies is still cool.  We'll see though.

Next up is some HQ's for the army!  I have several built in various stages and primed, so now I need to figure out what I intend to do.  For the scaled cloaks, I want to do something cool, but I am unsure as to what.  So I might spend some time this morning using the Googles to see what's out there.

Anyways, I'll post more pictures as I take them, but seeing as 3 of the 5 light bulbs from my light are dead, I need to get more before I can take better pictures.  Yay me.  I hate spending money these days on anything but models, but it's all I ever seem to do >.<  Damn you real life issues!

Saturday, January 7, 2012

Sad to sell this army, amazing deal though for you!

So I hate to have to post this, but some things have gone crazy in my life and I am in a pinch for money.  So that means that the army I won from Heroes of Armageddon is up for sale!  I sold my Menoth and Tyranid armies today as well, and if this thing sells I'll be good I think.  But my loss is your gain here.  The auction can be found at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280803032326

The starting bid is about $800 below what the costs of everything is, even before the paint jobs, so that is a steal.  The buy it now price is about exactly what the costs of everything included is, again, without the paint jobs.  So basically it's a great looking, mostly painted Ork horde army at cost!  Saves you all the time of painting all of those Boyz.

Anyways, I'm off to watch a movie with my son, so happy bidding and let everyone know about this auction so I can sell it!

Another Necron test model!!!!

So here is the test model I knock out this morning for my Immortals.  This will be the general theme for all my infantry, with different variations for the different types of course.  I need to figure out squad markings still, as well as clean up the silver after my lazy ass washes it, haha.  All said and done though, it's a fairly easy paint job that I won't lose my mind repeating several hundred times (okay, not that many, but still, quite a few times).  Anyways, here is the other four from the box, built in two pieces to paint it easier, since I did air brush both sides of the gun.

Inquisitors and Thousand Sons???

So as the post says, I now have two Inquisitors in my force.  With the league I will be playing in, the first games are 500 points and you cannot have named characters or anything with a 2+ save until the points rise to 1000 points.  That means my absolute only choice was one of the generic Inquisitor types.  So, instead of buying two of the ugly GW ones, or waiting a long while for two of the AWESOME forge world ones, I build two from bits I had laying around.  They look very different from the rest of the force (as they should), and the big problem then presented itself on how to paint them, or even how to justify them in my Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons army...FML.  More below the break!
